There's just one snag. At present, on the south side, access to the Leonda car park is via a garden bed with rock edges. This makes for a rough ride for those on wheels, whether on bikes or in prams, and is not ideal even for walkers.

For many years on the south side, access from the underpass to the Leonda car park was via a garden bed with rock edges and a concrete kerb. This made for a rough ride for those on wheels, whether on bikes or in prams, and was not ideal even for walkers.

The BUG has been making representations to Council about this problem for some years. Our suggested solution was a path through the garden bed to the Leonda car park. A minor adjustment to parking spaces would also be required.

Not in our wildest dreams did we anticipate the deluxe promenade now in place. The underpass now connects via a boardwalk with a smooth, wide shared path that skirts the reception centre, before crossing to Wallen Reserve via a stretch of red coloured pavement that clearly signals its presence to motorists. Cyclists and walkers now have a link that is both safe and comfortable to use.
The route would follow the fuchsia colored route. This route is a good result. It's good for cyclists, walkers and would meet DDA standards. The associated landscaping will be good for Leonda. Rather than confronting an ugly carpark, patrons will be able to make use of a nicely landscaped pathway. Great for a quick romatic walk down to the park for Leonda's dinner guests.

The new path follows the fuchsia colored route.
The [[Media:BCC_draft_Leonda_improvements_img-Y151644-0001.pdf|solution]] previously proposed by Council was to run a path up to Wallen Rd beside the small electricity substation. This would work well for those intending to head west towards the city. However those heading to Wallen Reserve and Fairview Park would be directed along the Wallen Rd footpath, past the Leonda entrance and on to the eastern side of the car park, then another path leading south to Wallen Reserve. Refer to the route in red on the map.

The route shown in red on the map is one of the earlier suggestions which was finally rejected.

If the path were to traverse the car park entrance, we would like to see an appropriate path treatment used. See this [http://www.boroondarabug.org/jp/documents/bayside_traffic_flyer.pdf example.] However a simpler solution maybe about 5 metres of bitumen put down and a single pram ramp!

Many people who walk or cycle through West Hawthorn will be aware of the very useful underpass at the Wallen Rd Bridge. This underpass provides a means of crossing under Wallen Rd rather than trying to cross this very busy road or detouring the considerable distance to the nearest traffic lights. It provides a pleasant off-road link between Morang Reserve and Wallen Rd Reserve, which in turn connects to Fairview Park.

For many years on the south side, access from the underpass to the Leonda car park was via a garden bed with rock edges and a concrete kerb. This made for a rough ride for those on wheels, whether on bikes or in prams, and was not ideal even for walkers.

The BUG raised this issue with Council as long ago as 2001. Our suggested solution then was a path through the garden bed to the Leonda car park and a simple pram ramp. A minor adjustment to parking spaces would also have been required. Various other solutions were discussed and rejected for different reasons.

The new path follows the fuchsia colored route. The route shown in red on the map is one of the earlier suggestions which was finally rejected.
