The Walmer Street bridge was officially declared open on Tuesday 27 August 2024 after lengthy repairs and enhancements were completed.
Speakers at the opening were Cr Lisa Hollingsworth, Mayor of Boroondara, Daniel Freer, Director of Places and Spaces, Cr Nick Stavrou and Senator Raff Ciccone.
The Walmer Street Bridge Coalition worked hard since 2018 to get this completed and included Yarra and Boroondara Councils, Walmer Street Action Group, Collingwood and Abbotsford Residents Association (CARA) and the Yarra and Boroondara Bicycle User Groups.
The northern land bridge section was replaced and the heritage nominated span preserved.
In 6 months since the bridge reopened 149,000 bikes and 191,000 walkers have used the bridge!
